When CranioSacral Therapy Beats Massage Hands Down

People often ask me when I would recommend CranioSacral Therapy (CST) over massage therapy. Ironically, most people who seek either massage or CST are actually looking for the same benefits: pain relief, stress reduction, relaxation, headaches, even relief from emotional issues. But since many people have never heard of CST, they often don’t recognize when it may be even better for them.

Here are some of the primary differences. First, massage therapy generally requires you to disrobe and recline on a treatment table under appropriately draped sheets. Lotion or oil may be used, and the pressure can vary from light and comfortable to deep and forceful.

With CranioSacral Therapy you also lie down on a comfortable treatment table, but you stay fully clothed. The therapist uses no lotion or oil, just a gentle touch. An evaluation generally requires no more pressure than 5 grams, or roughly the weight of a nickel.

Where massage focuses on the musculoskeletal system, CST focuses on the central nervous system, the connective tissues that run throughout the body, and the internal fluids. By releasing tensions around the central nervous system, CST helps correct and strengthen this master control system to better regulate all your body’s systems and functions. It allows your body to regenerate at a core level, creating far-reaching effects.

Simply put, CranioSacral Therapy releases your pain, stress and discomfort from the source of the problem rather than trying to make it feel better on a superficial level. The results can be much longer lasting, and often even permanent.

What’s the best way for you to know if a CranioSacral Therapy session might help you more than a massage? Here’s one tip: If you find yourself getting massage over and over to deal with the same issues, try CST. See if you can get to the core of the issue so you don’t have to keep dealing with the same uncomfortable symptoms.

Also, keep in mind that everyone has some sort of stress in their lives. So a CST tune-up now and again to balance the central nervous system will allow you to function at your best, and feel good from head to toe.

Now don’t get me wrong – I love a nice massage as much as you do. But the next time you think you need a massage, ask yourself this: Could a CST session help me even more? It may just beat massage, hands down.

Nurture and nature

What do you do to nurture and nourish yourself?  You have probably heard me ask you that at one session or another.  It seems to be the theme of the week.  Sometimes we are so caught up in our life; work, our health, taking care of others that we forget about how important it is to really to take some time for ourselves.  This type of time out should refresh us, rejuvinate us and fill us up.  When we are depleted we really can not give our full attention or all to the task at hand.  Some of us have not done this for so long we don’t even know what types of things to do.

Let me give you some clues- exercise, movement, painting, knitting, lunch with a friend, petting the dog, a warm shower, a walk outside, watching the sunset, a tv show, journaling, breathing, meditating…Ok you get the idea.  Thanks for the reminder.  I think I will go take a bath!
